Explore the Scientific Miracles of the Quran

Quran is not just a book; it is a Divine Book that contains the words of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى. A human does not write the content of this Holy Book. It was revealed by Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى through His Angel Gabriel عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُto Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى is the creator of this whole universe and everything in it. So, He is the One Who knows everything about this universe, the earth, the stars, the sky, and the heavens. He knows how this world was created and what lies inside the earth and above the sky. Hence, every visible and invisible thing about this universe is only known to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, which He had revealed to His Messenger Muhammad ﷺ, through the Quran.

So, the Quran is the ultimate source of knowledge. It contains so many things that were beyond comprehension at its revelation. Over time, many such things have been explained with the help of the latest technologies and scientific research that were already mentioned in the Quran hundreds of years ago.

The Biggest Miracle of the Quran

There are different heavenly books, such as Torah, Zabur, Injeel and Quran, given to different messengers for the guidance of their people. Amongst all these holy books, the Quran is the only one preserved in its actual form, while the original version of all the others is no longer available. That’s the biggest miracle of the Quran. This fact is narrated in the 9^th verse of Surah Al-Hijr.

Translation

It is certainly We Who have revealed the Reminder, and it is certainly We Who will preserve it.

So, the Quran still exists with its original content, without the addition or deletion of even a single letter. Additionally, this is the only book in the world preserved in millions of people’s hearts and minds worldwide. Millions of Muslins memorize this Holy Book, with all its delicacies of pronunciation and punctuation. This is also a source of preservation of the Quran in its actual form. Generations after generations, Muslims have been memorizing it as their religious duty.

Another miracle of the Quran is that the Arabic language is also protected from distortions so that the Quran remains protected and understandable for generations to come. Apart from that, there are many scientific miracles mentioned in the Quran

Importance of Scientific Miracles of the Quran

The Quran contains many facts about the universe, proven by science after hundreds of years. Scholars call them scientific miracles of the Quran. These scientific miracles are important in many ways.

• We get impressed when researchers and scientists explain a natural phenomenon in detail. But when the Islamic scholars tell us that the same has already been mentioned and explained in the Quran by Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, we get astonished. That proves the Quran is an authentic and heavenly book, which contains the correct knowledge, proven by science hundreds of years later.
• When a common man comes across such scientifically proven concepts that were already available in the Quran, his faith and belief in the Quran and Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى further strengthens.
• Scientifically proven things discussed in the Quran long ago are a source of argumentation and academic discussions in interreligious dialogues. Being a Muslim, we have unconditional belief in Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, Quran and His Prophets. But others want some tangible proof of what is mentioned in the Quran.

Scientific Miracles of the Quran

When we talk about scientific miracles of the Quran, it refers to the facts and events that were revealed in the Quran at a time when no one could comprehend it, and the same was scientifically proved later on. Scholars have identified hundreds of such facts in the Quran. Here, we will try to summarize some of them:

1. Embryology

Embryology is the science of understanding how a human is created in the womb of his/her mother. Though the whole process of this embryonic development was mentioned in the Quran, medical science explained it after hundreds of years. This is narrated in the Quran in the 13^th and 14^th verses of Surah Al-Mominun.

Translation

then placed each ˹human˺ as a sperm-drop in a secure place,

then We developed the drop into a clinging clot, then developed the clot into a lump ˹of flesh˺, then developed the lump into bones, then clothed the bones with flesh, then We brought it into being as a new creation. So Blessed is Allah, the Best of Creators.

The entire embryonic development is explained in these two verses of the Quran.

2. The Theory of the Big Bang

The Big Bang theory was floated around 100 years ago. It says that the universe was created due to a huge explosion. Before that, scientists believed the universe existed naturally, so no one created it. Later, the famous scientist Einstein explained that the universe consistently expands like a balloon. So, there has to be an initial point from which it starts to expand. Eventually, this theory was accepted by most scientists and is currently known as the theory of the Big Bang.

But the Quran revealed the same in the 30^th verse of surah Al-Anbya.

Translation

Do the disbelievers not realize that the heavens and earth were ˹once˺ one mass then We split them apart? And We created from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?

The above verse clearly explains how Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى created the universe. And more importantly, the second part of this verse says that water is the basis of life. This fact is widely accepted by scientists, proving the Quran’s supremacy.

3. Theory of Expansion of Universe

The theory of the Big Bang also explains that the universe was continuously expanding. Initially, some of the scientists did not accept this idea, as they noticed that the process of expansion of the universe had slowed down. But later on, it was revealed that the universe started to expand rapidly.

It was just a matter of decades when scientists realized this fact, whereas the Quran explained it in the 47^th and 48^th verses of Surah Adh-Dhariyat.

Translation

We built the universe with ˹great˺ might, and We are certainly expanding ˹it˺

As for the earth, We spread it out. How superbly did We smooth it out!

So, the concept of the universe’s expansion was already explained in the Quran, which was proven just a few decades ago by scientists.

4. The Concept of Black Hole

Will this universe continue to expand, or if it will end one day? This has been a hot topic of discussion amongst the scholars and scientists. Scientists believe that a huge black hole exists in the universe, and everything coming in its near vicinity gets absorbed in it. They believe that Earth may get lost in this black hole one day. Some also believe that another one will emerge once this universe ends up in a black hole.

The Quran had already explained the end of the universe in the 104^th verse of surah Al-Anbya.

Translation

On that Day We will roll up the heavens like a scroll of writings. Just as We produced the first creation, ˹so˺ shall We reproduce it. That is a promise binding on Us. We truly uphold ˹Our promises˺

5. The Mountains

Verses 6 and 7 of Surah Al-Naba, narrate the nature of mountains.

Translation

Have We not smoothed out the earth like a bed˺,

and ˹made˺ the mountains as ˹its˺ pegs,

Whereas in the 88^th verse of Surah Al-Naml, it is explained that the mountains are not static but travel like clouds.

Translation

Now you see the mountains, thinking they are firmly fixed, but they are travelling ˹just˺ like clouds. ˹That is˺ the design of Allah, Who has perfected everything. Surely He is All-Aware of what you do.

So, per the above-referred verses of the Quran, mountains are rooted deep in the earth’s crust, and secondly, they are constantly moving or floating like clouds. Modern-day geological science proves both these concepts. Renowned geologists Grotzinger & Jordan have explained in their book that “beneath a mountain range, where the crust is thickest, a deep root projects into the mantle and provides buoyancy.”

It is further explained in their book that “as a mountain range forms, it slowly sinks under the force of gravity, and the continental crust bends downward. When enough of a root bulge into the mantle to provide buoyancy, the mountain range floats.”

Bottom Line

These are just a few scientific miracles explained in the Quran long ago. And who knows how more is to come in the future. The Quran is a book of facts about this Universe’s past, present, and future. As technology and science advances further, we will surely see the supremacy of the Quran.
