India Inc Looking To Recruit Talent With ‘Green’ Skills

NEW DELHI: Indian companies are increasingly looking to hire people who can help improve their green credentials.
Four of every five Indian business leaders who took part in a survey conducted by IBM and decision intelligence company Morning Consult, said they will hire people with expertise or experience in sustainability.
The survey report, shared exclusively with ET, says 82% of the business leaders in India are scouting for talent with green and sustainability tech skills.
The study, which covered more than 250 business leaders in India, also reveals a growing skills gap in sustainability. Nearly 75% of these leaders expressed confidence in their organisation’s plan to invest in IT sustainability training by the end of next year.
“This underlines the urgency and relevance of acquiring these green skills,” Justina Nixon-Saintil, vice president and global chief impact officer at IBM, told ET. “Among the skills needed for the new ESG landscape, I would focus on those related to AI (artificial intelligence), which is already in short supply worldwide.”
Sustainability experts help companies deliver their products and services in a sustainable manner. In corporate parlance, sustainability also means focus on reducing the carbon footprint of buildings, operations, processes, transportation, etc. through use of renewable energy, proper waste management and sustainable development.
Saintil, who was on her first visit to India recently, said there is extraordinary potential for India, given the country’s vast population of young learners.
Tech major IBM has collaborated with The University of Chicago Trust in Delhi to offer water solutions as part of its ‘Sustainability Accelerator’ programme.
The University of Chicago Trust in Delhi will aggregate water quality information in India; build and deploy tools designed to democratise access to water quality information, and help improve water resource management, said Saintil.
IBM is starting with a pilot in Maharashtra which would then be rolled out in the other states. “All this will happen over the course of the next few years. Through the collaboration, we will provide IBM technologies, such as Watsonx, and an ecosystem of experts,” said Saintil.
The focus of this project under the sustainability accelerator programme is to make clean water accessible to all, including the vulnerable and under-represented communities. IBM is also introducing a roadmap for sustainability skills courses. The company is also helping the farmer community in northern India by promoting regenerative farming practices by bridging the knowledge-action gap with technology and data.
