Which Dua Should Be Read After Fajr Prayer
Prayer or Salah is the second pillar of Islam. It was the first act of worship that was made obligatory by Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى and is of the utmost importance in a Muslim’s life. Duas offer Muslims a direct link with their creator, much like prayers; hence, prayers and dua are closely interlinked. It is no surprise that dua has been named ‘private prayer.’
Fajr Prayer
Offered by Muslims, the Fajr prayer marks the commencement of the five daily prayers. It is performed after dawn but before the sun rises. Aisha رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا narrated: “Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى Messenger ﷺ would pray Subh (at such time that) the women would leave (after the prayer)” – AI-Ansari رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ (one of the narrators) said – the women would pass by wrapped in their Mirts and they would not be recognizable due to the darkness.” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 153, Book 2, Hadith 5)
Fajr prayer can be considered one of the hardest prayers to offer because it requires you to wake up early and leave behind the comfort of sleep. However, those who do offer it are blessed. Moreover, it is mentioned in the Quran that the Fajr prayer is witnessed by angels “Indeed the Quranic recitation of Fajr is witnessed.” (Quran, 17:78)
What Is Dua?
Dua (meaning supplication or invocation) is a form of worship in Islam. It is not obligatory, but Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى blesses and loves those who make dua to him as it brings his servants closer to Him. It is narrated by Anas bin Malik رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ that Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى Messenger ﷺ said, “Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His slave than anyone of you is pleased with finding his camel which he had lost in the desert. ” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6309, Book 80, Hadith 6)
Duas serve as a means of communication between us and the Almighty. A plethora of duas exist for various purposes, including seeking forgiveness from Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, seeking guidance, and seeking His blessings.
Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى says in the Quran: “And your Lord says, call on me; I will answer your (prayer). But those who are too arrogant to worship Me will surely find themselves in Hell, in humiliation.” (Quran, 40:60).
Dua After Fajr Prayer
The significance of offering duas after Fajr prayers cannot be overstated. They are a demonstration of Muslims’ unwavering devotion to their Lord. By sacrificing sleep and worldly activities for the sake of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, Muslims proclaim that HE is the foremost priority in their lives. The dua after Fajr prayer is a gift and should be satisfied so Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى favors you with His blessings and keeps you on the right path throughout the day.
Which Dua Should Be Read After Fajr Prayer?
Many duas can be read after the Fajr prayer. The following are some examples of Fajr dua:
- اللَّهُمَّ أَجِرْنِي مِنَ النَّارِ which translates to: “O Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, protect me from the Hellfire.” This dua is a humble request to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, seeking His safeguard against the torment of hell. According to the Sunan of Abu Daud, reciting this dua and passing away on the same night ensures salvation from hellfire.
Similarly, if one recites it seven times after Fajr salat without conversing with anyone and passes away on that very day, one will be saved from the fiery depths of hell.
I ask You for knowledge which is beneficial and sustenance which is good, and deeds which are acceptable.” It refers to earnings from business and any other form of employment.
Secondly, this dua is also used to ask for good provisions. The reference to “good sustenance” emphasizes the importance of acquiring lawful means of sustenance, as Allah Almighty سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى only accepts what is halal (permissible).
- Another dua is اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ لَ يَنْفَعُ وَمِنْ قَلْبٍ لَ يَخْشَعُ وَمِنْ نَفْسٍ لَ تَشْبَعُ وَمِنْ دَعْوٍَة لَ يُسْتَجَابُ لَهَ ا which can be translated to “O Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, I seek refuge in You from knowledge which does not benefit, from a heart that does not entertain the fear (of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى), from a soul that is not satisfied and the supplication that is not answered.” (Sahih Muslim).
This dua can be read by those who wish to seek the right knowledge of our religion. It is a form of protection against damaging knowledge and of no benefit. It puts the fear of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى into their hearts so they do not do wrong.
- After every prayer, it is also recommended to recite Astaghfirullah three times. Imam Sadiq has said that one who sits quietly after each mandatory prayer and recites the following three times, Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى will pardon all his sins: أستغفر الله الذي لا إله إلا هو الحي القيوم ذو الجلال والإكرام وأتوب إليه.
This means, “I seek forgiveness from the Lord (testifying) There is no God other than Him the Living and the Everlasting of Majesty and Splendour, and I turn to Him in Repentance.” This can be recited to soften Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى heart towards you and garner His mercy as He is All-Merciful.
Salat, one of Islam’s fundamental pillars, is regarded highly. Duas after Fajr salat offer Muslims a wide array of benefits and are a sure way of coming closer to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى.
