Muslim couples are encouraged to maintain a loving and affectionate relationship as a sacred bond. Meanwhile, when it’s Ramadan, Muslims must abstain from any sexual activity and physical intimacy during daylight hours. This may lead to confusion about whether kissing one’s partner is allowed.
However, according to the Hadith narrated by Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), in Sahih Bukhari: 1927 and Sahih Muslim: 1106,
“The Prophet (ﷺ) used to kiss and embrace (his wives) while he was fasting, and he had more power to control his desires than any of you.”
What the statement means, “…and he had more power to control his desires than any of you,” is that the Prophet (ﷺ) was able to control himself and to control his desire so he would enjoy closeness, but that would not lead to intercourse or emission of many.
Also, a man came to Ibn ‘Abbās (radiyallāhu ‘anhumā) and said,
“I married a pretty daughter of an uncle of mine, and this took place in Ramadān. Am I allowed to kiss her?” Ibn ‘Abbās asked: “Are you able to control yourself?” He replied: “Yes.” So, Ibn ‘Abbās said: “Kiss her.”
Then. the man asked: “Am I allowed to caress her?” Ibn ‘Abbās said: “Are you able to control yourself?” The man replied: “Yes.”So, Ibn ‘Abbās said: “Caress her.”
The man asked: “Am I allowed to touch her private part with my hand?” Ibn ‘Abbās said: “Are you able to control yourself?” The man said: “Yes.” So, Ibn ‘’Abbās said: “Touch her.”
Moreover, Islamic scholars also interpret that any physical intimacy that does not lead to sexual intercourse is permissible during fasting. Even so, the main focus of Ramadan is to purify oneself and draw closer to Allah. Therefore, any physical contact between spouses should not override this spiritual purpose.
Note: You can’t have sexual relations during the day when you’re fasting. However, you can have sexual relations at night when you are not fasting.
Can caressing my wife break my fast?
No, caressing alone does not break the fast. However, be mindful of engaging in any activities that could lead to ejaculation, as this would invalidate the fast. So, open communication is vital.
Spouses should discuss and mutually agree on boundaries and actions during fasting. Understanding each other’s comfort levels helps maintain a harmonious relationship while observing religious obligations.
The Prophet’s Example: Maintaining Martial Bonds During the Holy Month
It is permissible for a person to kiss and caress his wife during Ramadan. The Prophet (ﷺ) set an example for us by engaging in such activities while fasting but remember that certain boundaries must be respected.
One should always maintain discipline and control over their desires, as fasting is a time for spiritual growth and reflection. Therefore, kissing your spouse during Ramadan is permissible and can strengthen the bond between a husband and wife.
Let us all strive to make the most of this blessed month, and may Allah (SWT) guide us all to the right path.
