Woman’s Choice of a Husband Against the Consent of Her Family
Dr. Zeinab Al-`Alawani, Instructor of Fiqh and Islamic Studies, Graduate School of Islamic and Social Sciences, states the following: “Marriage is a relationship between two people that have accepted each other. Usually when emotions are outweighing, wisdom is lacking and people do not think properly taking many things into consideration, and this is what I see happening in many situations.
Religiously speaking, a girl, specially a wise and mature one, cannot be forced into marriage. However, there are many things that the guardian might be aware of that the girl does not know, and in this case it is the responsibility of the guardian to speak frankly with his daughter and try to convince her that his choice is good for her rather than imposing it on her.
