For today’s #MuslimGirlRamadanBookClub reflections, we are tapping into Juz 12, spanning from verse 11:6 to 12:52. And we can pretty much say that if you are going through difficulties in life right now, this Juz is what you need. This Juz is not just an antidote; this is the cure.
So let’s tap right into it!
Patience and perseverance in trials
In Surah Hud, verse 11:115, Allah reassures Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to maintain patience and steadfastness in the face of adversity, telling him that the rewards are never reduced or lowered for those who do good.
And be patient! Certainly Allah does not discount the reward of the good-doers.
— Quran (11:115)
This verse serves as a reminder to us that trials and tribulations are inevitable in life, but through patience and perseverance, we can attain the divine reward promised by Allah (SWT). How many times have we been in a tough situation and just felt life has come to an end or a point of no return? Whenever plights hit us and make us feel helpless, we need to remain patient, because our patience is what we get rewarded for immensely and abundantly.
Surah Yusuf also teaches us about how to practice and maintain patience through the story of Prophet Joseph (Yusuf). It highlights the importance of trust in Allah’s plan even in the darkest of times. In verse 12:21, Yusuf’s brothers plot against him, and yet Allah (SWT) has a better plan for Prophet Yusuf (AS):
The man from Egypt who bought him said to his wife, “Take good care of him, perhaps he may be useful to us or we may adopt him as a son.” This is how We established Joseph in the land so that We might teach him the interpretation of dreams. Allah’s Will always prevails, but most people do not know.
— Quran (12:21)
This verse underscores the significance of entrusting one’s affairs to Allah, knowing that His plan is ultimately the best. I personally love this verse because if you are someone who knows someone facing family issues, you can reassure them that Allah handles their affairs even if those who are plotting against them are their close circle. Allah (SWT) elevates good people in this life and the hereafter so never lose your faith in being good regardless of your own current circumstances. He is the One who says, “They planned, but Allah also planned. And Allah is the best of planners.” 1
Overcoming envy and jealousy
Surah Yusuf also addresses the destructive nature of envy and jealousy, as seen in the story of Yusuf’s brothers. In verses 12:4-5, Yusuf narrates his dream to his father, which invokes envy in his brothers’ hearts. The verses read:
˹Remember˺ when Joseph said to his father, “O my dear father! Indeed I dreamt of eleven stars, and the sun, and the moon—I saw them prostrating to me! He replied, “O my dear son! Do not relate your vision to your brothers, or they will devise a plot against you. Surely Satan is a sworn enemy to humankind.
— Quran (12:4-5)
This verse tells us that the main reason why Yusuf’s brothers were plotting against him was that they were jealous and envious of him. Given how Yusuf (AS) wins in the end, we can learn that the verse here is for us to take notes that succumbing to envy and jealousy will only cause harm; being grateful for your blessings is what will elevate you and your life.
Upholding truth and integrity
Surah Hud emphasizes the significance of upholding truth and integrity, even in the face of opposition and adversity.
In verse 11:113, Allah commands Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to maintain steadfastness in delivering the message of Islam, saying:
And do not be inclined to the wrongdoers or you will be touched by the Fire. For then you would have no protectors other than Allah, nor would you be helped.
— qURAN (11:113)
This verse underscores the importance of standing firm in righteousness and avoiding the company of those who engage in wrongdoing. If you ask me, holding onto your sense of integrity and your own values is what can help you set the right boundaries with people. Do not let others make you shrink so that you can fit their frames. Not everything that glitters is gold. Follow what you believe is right and stay true to your values. Focus on bettering yourself and pleasing God (SWT) and everything else will naturally fall into place.
Divine justice and mercy
Surah Hud also emphasizes the concept of divine justice and mercy in verses 11:106-107, stating:
As for those bound for misery, they will be in the Fire, where they will be sighing and gasping, staying there forever, as long as the heavens and the earth will endure, except what your Lord wills. Surely your Lord does what He intends.
— Quran (11:106-107)
This verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of neglecting Allah’s demands and messages to us. However, Allah (SWT) immediately lets us know that he is willing to single people out and those people who are always repenting again and again whenever they fall off track.
Using divine signs as proof that Allah will not abandon you
Surah Hud begins with a call to reflect on Allah’s creatures and how their diverse conditions reflect His power. Allah (SWT) tells us in the Quran:
There is no moving creature on earth whose provision is not guaranteed by Allah. And He knows where it lives and where it is laid to rest. All is ˹written˺ in a perfect Record.
— Quran (11:6)
The verse encourages us to acknowledge Allah’s providence and wisdom in supporting all living things, as well as the exquisite design of His creation. So next time you feel worried about how you will provide for yourself, remember that Allah (SWT) has everything already recorded for you. Your provision and sustenance are from Him; you just do your best by taking action so that you get the reward of trying. Either way, you will always get your sustenance. 2
Juz 12 is a breath of fresh air for all of us who are going through so many plights, trials, and tribulations.
