Peace, one and all…
Narrated Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri: “Multiply the invocation of God – be He exalted — until they say: there is a fool!”
(Quoted by Ibn Hibban. Authenticated hadith)
For the heart of the aspirant who dedicates himself to the invocation with fervor and perseverance, [the invocation] becomes a source of light. And yet, the heart can sometimes be overwhelmed by the brightness of the Divine light and be instantly carried away by the power of God’s love, which explains why this state can appear as foolishness in the eyes of a profane person.
Ibn ‘Ata’ Allah
Know that through His Name—which we have spoken of in an earlier chapter—God illuminates the person who hears it with His Knowledge, through which God conveys inspiration and comprehension to him. The spiritual motive for which God invites to the abundant invocation of His Name, which He prefers to any other invocation—a fact demonstrating the love and high esteem that God has for His servant—is for no other reason except the meditation (tafakkur) on the intelligible meanings of the secrets of the Name. This is how the suns of the lights rise in the hearts and the bodies, and the invokers are rooted firmly in Knowledge, and how their love is intensified and they become God’s elect. Hence, the sign of the love of God is abundant invocation.
As the poet said:
Repeat the invocation of His Names to me,
Polish the hearts through His light and His brightness.
Spread the blows before the souls,
They will be eager to taste this nectar.
Through this Name the world received light
The earth, the air, and the heavens.
Perplexed are the intellects of the aspirants,
Before the grandeur of His Attributes.
The hearts of the creatures are set ablaze before His brightness.
And when His majesty is unveiled to the hearts,
They receive the secret of His elevation and His clarity.
