Pro-Palestine Gen Z Students Take To “Teens Take The Met!”
In a groundbreaking turn of events, the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of Teens Take The Met! this year witnessed an extraordinary influx of students, from across New York City’s five boroughs, calling on The Met Museum to stand up for the Palestinians who have been crippled down by all forms of genocide for over 75 years, including culturicide.
Co-hosted by over 55 elite partners, the annual event enables teens aged 13 to 18 to participate in all forms possible of cultural activities that hit home, from writing to music, art making, performances, and much more. Muslim Girl, represented by our fearless founder Amani and powerful journalist Maliya, decided to participate in this special occasion to steer the attention to what truly matters right now.
Never the ones to come empty-handed, the Muslim Girl booth brought lively colors to the vicinity with its watermelon-inspired theme and traditional beads — and most importantly, a fully-fledged petition that represents the teens’ demands for The Met to support Palestine in order to protect the life and culture of Palestinians whose books, works of art, and cultural manifestations have been targeted and vandalized.
The massive lineup that quickly formed just to sign the petition was enough proof that this generation is here for liberation. The petition fully and clearly stated in its demands what The Met Museum has to do to stand up for Palestine: 1) Issuing an official statement that calls for a permanent ceasefire; 2) Putting on display a collection of Palestinian artworks; 3) Protecting and amplifying the individual and collective voices of The Met staff who are horrified by the unprecedented death toll and destruction happening in Gaza; and 4) Featuring Palestinian artworks and masterpieces in galleries and online and correct inaccurate attributions related to Palestinian works.
In light of this major event, here are our highlights from this magical night.
