Beloved Dhu al-Nun al-Misri said:
‘There are two kinds of repentance: the repentance of penitence and the repentance of compliance. The repentance of penitence is when God’s servant repents out of fear of the punishment of the Lord. The repentance of compliance is when God’s servant repents out of shame before the Lord’.
