Day 20 – Reflecting on Allah’s Names: Al-Mubdi, Al-Mu’id, Al-Muhyi
There are moments in life when we feel like we’re starting over. A new phase, a fresh chance, an unexpected turn. Sometimes, we embrace it with hope, and other times, it feels like we’ve lost what we once had. But in these moments, we find comfort in knowing that Allah is the One who begins, restores, and gives life to all things.
Today, we reflect on three of Allah’s beautiful names that remind us of His power to create, His ability to return what is lost, and His mercy in reviving hearts, faith, and life itself:
- Al-Mubdi (ٱلْمُبْدِئُ) – The Originator, The One Who Begins Creation
- Al-Mu’id (ٱلْمُعِيدُ) – The Restorer, The One Who Brings Back
- Al-Muhyi (ٱلْمُحْيِى) – The Giver of Life
These names remind us that nothing is impossible for Allah. He creates from nothing, He restores what seems lost, and He brings life to what appears lifeless.
Al-Mubdi (ٱلْمُبْدِئُ) – The Originator, The One Who Begins Creation
The name Al-Mubdi comes from the root “b-d-ʾ” (ب د ء), meaning to begin, to initiate, to start something new. Allah is Al-Mubdi—the One who brings creation into existence from nothing.
إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ يُبْدِئُ وَيُعِيدُ ١٣
“Indeed, it is He who originates [creation] and repeats it.”
(Surah Al-Buruj 85:13)
Every single thing we see around us—the sky, the earth, the mountains, the people—all were brought into existence by Allah alone. Nothing existed before He willed it to be. Al-Mubdi reminds us that Allah is the true source of everything.
At times, we may feel stuck in life, not knowing how to begin something new—a new habit, a new project, a new journey in faith. But just as Allah is the One who begins all creation, He is also the One who can help us take the first step.
Reflection:
- What is something new we have been wanting to start? How can we turn to Al-Mubdi for guidance?
- How can we appreciate Allah’s power of creation in our daily lives?
Al-Mu’id (ٱلْمُعِيدُ) – The Restorer, The One Who Brings Back
The name Al-Mu’id comes from the root “ʿ-w-d” (ع و د), meaning to return, to bring back, to repeat. Allah is Al-Mu’id—the One who restores what was lost, who returns creation after death, and who gives us second chances.
“As We began the first creation, We will repeat it. [That is] a promise binding upon Us. Indeed, We will do it.”
(Surah Al-Anbiya 21:104)
We all experience loss—sometimes, it is the loss of health, of time, of relationships, or even the loss of faith. But Al-Mu’id reminds us that nothing is truly lost when it is in Allah’s hands. He has the power to bring back what we thought was gone. He returns hope after despair, faith after doubt, and life after death.
Even when we make mistakes, even when we feel distant from Allah, Al-Mu’id is always ready to restore us—to return us to His mercy, to give us another chance.
Reflection:
- What is something we have lost that we ask Al-Mu’id to restore in our lives?
- How can we reflect this name by giving people second chances, just as Allah gives us?
Al-Muhyi (ٱلْمُحْيِى) – The Giver of Life
The name Al-Muhyi comes from the root “ḥ-y-y” (ح ي ي), meaning to give life, to revive, to restore vitality. Allah is Al-Muhyi—the One who brings life to the dead, revives hearts, and gives us the ability to grow and change.
“How can you disbelieve in Allah when you were lifeless and He brought you to life?”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:28)
We see the dry earth receives rain and becomes alive with plants, a sick person recovers, a sinner repents and finds a new purpose. Allah,Al-Muhyi revives not just bodies, but hearts and souls as well.
Sometimes, we feel spiritually drained, disconnected, or lifeless inside. But Allah can bring back the light of faith in our hearts. He can revive our hope, our love for Him, and our desire to do good. No matter how far we may feel, Allah,Al-Muhyi can give us a new beginning.
Reflection:
- What is one way we can ask Al-Muhyi to revive our faith and hearts today?
- How can we bring life and hope to others, reflecting this beautiful name?
