Day 21 – Reflecting on Allah’s Names: Al-Mumeet, Al-Hayy, Al-Qayyum
Life is a journey, and every soul will taste death. Yet, death is not an end; it is a transition to the eternal. In moments of fear, uncertainty, or weakness, we take comfort in knowing that Allah is the One who gives life and takes it away, the Ever-Living, and the One who sustains all existence.
Today, we reflect on three of Allah’s beautiful names that remind us of His absolute control over life and death, His eternal nature, and His power in upholding all of creation:
- Al-Mumeet (ٱلْمُمِيتُ) – The Creator of Death, The Giver of Death
- Al-Hayy (ٱلْحَىُّ) – The Ever-Living
- Al-Qayyum (ٱلْقَيُّومُ) – The Sustainer, The Self-Existing
These names remind us that while everything around us is temporary, Allah is eternal and ever-sustaining. He alone gives life, takes it away, and maintains everything in existence.
Al-Mumeet (ٱلْمُمِيتُ) – The Creator of Death, The Giver of Death
The name Al-Mumeet comes from the root “m-w-t” (م و ت), meaning to cause death, to bring an end to life. Allah is Al-Mumeet—the One who determines when every soul will depart from this world.
هُوَ يُحْىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ ٥٦
“He gives life and causes death, and to Him, you will be returned.”
(Surah Yunus 10:56)
Death is a reality we often fear, yet it is also a mercy. For the believer, it is not the end—it is the beginning of our eternal journey toward Allah. Death reminds us that this world is temporary, that our time here is limited, and that we must prepare for what is to come.
At times, we may experience the “death” of something in our lives—a phase ends, a dream fades, a relationship changes. But Al-Mumeet does not take away without wisdom. Just as death is part of the cycle of life, every loss we experience is part of a greater plan.
Reflection:
- How can we live each day as if it is a step closer to meeting Al-Mumeet?
- What is one way we can prepare for our eternal life while making the most of this one?
Al-Hayy (ٱلْحَىُّ) – The Ever-Living
The name Al-Hayy comes from the root “ḥ-y-y” (ح ي ي), meaning to live, to be alive, to have everlasting life. Allah is Al-Hayy—the One who is eternally living, whose life has no beginning and no end.
“Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255)
Everything in this world perishes—wealth, status, even the strongest of people. But Al-Hayy is the One who never dies, never weakens, never fades. His existence is independent of anything or anyone.
When we feel weak, when we fear death, or when we lose someone we love, we turn to Al-Hayy—the One who is always there, the One who remains when everything else passes away. Believing in Al-Hayy gives us hope, strength, and a sense of security.
Reflection:
- How can we strengthen our connection with Al-Hayy, the One who never dies?
- In what ways do we seek temporary sources of strength, when instead, we should turn to Allah?
Al-Qayyum (ٱلْقَيُّومُ) – The Sustainer, The Self-Existing
The name Al-Qayyum comes from the root “q-w-m” (ق و م), meaning to stand, to be self-sufficient, to uphold. Allah is Al-Qayyum—the One who sustains all of creation, who is completely independent, and upon whom everything depends.
“And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die, and exalt [Allah] with His praise. And sufficient is He to be, with the sins of His servants, Acquainted.”
(Surah Al-Furqan 25:58)
We need food, sleep, and rest to survive, but Allah does not need anything. He upholds the heavens and the earth, providing for every creature, sustaining every breath we take. If He were to stop sustaining the universe for even a moment, everything would collapse.
At times, we strive to control our lives, stressing over future plans as if everything rests on our shoulders. Yet, Allah, Al-Qayyum, reminds us that it is He who sustains our existence. Our health, wealth, and success are not in our hands—they belong to Him.
Reflection:
- How can we put more trust in Al-Qayyum, knowing that He is the One who sustains us?
- What is one worry we can leave to Al-Qayyum today, trusting that He will take care of it?
