Day 24 – Reflecting on Allah’s Names: Al-Muqaddim, Al-Mu’akhkhir, Al-Awwal
Life moves at its own pace—sometimes we feel ahead, other times behind. We wait for things to happen, wondering why certain doors open while others remain closed. In these moments, we find comfort in knowing that Allah is the One who advances and delays, the One who was before all things, and the One who perfectly arranges our lives.
Today, we reflect on three of Allah’s beautiful names that teach us about divine timing, patience, and trust in His wisdom:
- Al-Muqaddim (ٱلْمُقَدِّمُ) – The One Who Brings Forward
- Al-Mu’akhkhir (ٱلْمُؤَخِّرُ) – The One Who Delays
- Al-Awwal (ٱلأَوَّلُ) – The First, The Beginning of All Things
These names remind us that nothing happens randomly—every opportunity, every delay, and every change in life happens according to Allah’s perfect plan.
Al-Muqaddim (ٱلْمُقَدِّمُ) – The One Who Brings Forward
The name Al-Muqaddim comes from the root “q-d-m” (ق د م), meaning to advance, to bring forward, to prioritize. Allah is Al-Muqaddim—the One who places things in their right order, who brings us closer to what is best for us, and who grants success according to His divine wisdom.
نَرْفَعُ دَرَجَـٰتٍۢ مَّن نَّشَآءُ ۗ وَفَوْقَ كُلِّ ذِى عِلْمٍ عَلِيمٌۭ
“And We raise in degrees whom We will, but over every possessor of knowledge is one [more] knowing.”
(Surah Yusuf 12:76)
Sometimes, we feel a rush of opportunities, unexpected blessings, or moments where everything seems to align. Al-Muqaddim is the One who puts us in the right place at the right time. Allah moves us forward in ways we do not expect, whether in our faith, our relationships, or our personal growth. Every advancement is part of His divine arrangement.
Reflection:
- How can we recognize the blessings that Al-Muqaddim has brought into our lives?
- What is one way we can be grateful for the times Allah has placed us ahead in a situation?
Al-Mu’akhkhir (ٱلْمُؤَخِّرُ) – The One Who Delays
The name Al-Mu’akhkhir comes from the root “ʾ-kh-r” (أ خ ر), meaning to delay, to postpone, to keep something back for a reason. Allah is Al-Mu’akhkhir—the One who delays things with perfect wisdom, who withholds what is not yet meant to be, and who postpones matters for the right time.
“Perhaps you dislike something and it is good for you, and perhaps you love something and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you do not know.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:216)
Delays in life can feel frustrating—prayers that seem unanswered, dreams that seem distant, or changes that take longer than expected. But ALllah, Al-Mu’akhkhir is teaching us patience, strengthening our faith, and preparing us for something better. When we trust His timing, we find peace in knowing that every delay is a mercy in disguise.
Reflection:
- What is one moment in our lives where we now realize that Allah’s delay was actually a blessing?
- How can we practice more patience when things don’t happen as quickly as we want?
Al-Awwal (ٱلأَوَّلُ) – The First, The Beginning of All Things
The name Al-Awwal comes from the root “ʾ-w-l” (أ و ل), meaning to be first, to precede all others, to be the beginning of everything. Allah is Al-Awwal—He existed before time, before creation, before anything we can imagine.
“He is the First and the Last, the Ascendant and the Intimate, and He is, of all things, Knowing.”
(Surah Al-Hadid 57:3)
Everything we know—this world, our lives, our dreams—began with Al-Awwal. When we feel lost, we remember that our journey began with Allah, and it is to Him that we will ultimately return.
Reflection:
- How does knowing that Allah is Al-Awwal bring comfort to our hearts?
- How can we strengthen our connection to Al-Awwal in our daily lives?
Final Thoughts
These names teach us to trust the flow of our lives, knowing that every step is part of Allah’s perfect design.
- Al-Muqaddim reminds us that Allah moves us forward at the right time.
- Al-Mu’akhkhir reassures us that delays are not rejections, but divine wisdom at work.
- Al-Awwal grounds us in the truth that everything starts with Allah, and He is the ultimate source of all good.
Ya Allah, You are Al-Muqaddim—advance us in faith, in knowledge, and in everything that pleases You. You are Al-Mu’akhkhir—teach us patience when things do not happen as we wish. You are Al-Awwal—help us remember that our beginning and our end are with You.
What is one way we can surrender our plans to Allah today, trusting that He knows what is best for us?
