O my dear son! observe Prayer, and enjoin good, and forbid evil, and endure patiently whatever may befall thee. Surely this is of those matters which require firm resolve. And turn not thy cheek away from men in pride nor walk in the earth haughtily; surely, Allah loves not any arrogant boaster.

The Holy Prophet (sa) said, ‘The haughty, even with pride equal to a mustard seed in his heart, will not enter paradise.’ A man enquired: ‘What about a person who likes fine dress and fine shoes?’ He said, ‘Allah is Beautiful and likes beauty. Pride amounts to disclaiming truth out of self-esteem, and despising people.’

But, how superior in rank is the person who is deemed a saint or friend by Allah the Exalted Himself.
Islam, Saying of The Promised Messiah (as), MALFUZAT – VOL. I, P. 12.

HINDUISM, SRIMAD BHAGAVATAM, 11.4.
Not knowing the consequence of good and evil karmas, he is afflicted and hurt. Nevertheless, he, due to his egotism, piles up [more] karmas and undergoes births and deaths again and again.
