5 Charities and Organizations That Provide Aid to Sudan
These days, more than ever before, contributing to charities and organizations that provide relief to Sudan is paramount.
The civil war in Sudan broke out more than a year ago on April 15, 2023, between the two factions of the military government, the Sudanese Armed Forces led by Abdel Fattah Al Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces led by Hemedti. The crisis has been decreed as one of “epic proportions” by Rosemary Di-Carlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, and has unleashed a humanitarian crisis with over 14,000 people dead and 8.6 million displaced.
As the current social media discourse is (rightfully so) advocating for support for the Palestinian cause, we mustn’t forget the suffering of the Sudanese people. Though, as individuals, there isn’t a lot we can do in terms of mitigating the conflict, we can still contribute resources toward helping alleviate the suffering of those affected.
Here are 5 charities and organizations to support to help the innocent people of Sudan.
1. Muslim Aid
Muslim Aid is a UK-based charity founded in 1985 as a response to drought in the Horn of Africa. Currently, it operates in a multitude of countries including Palestine, Pakistan and Sudan. It has been operational in Sudan since 1991, for the purposes of drought alleviation with its office being located in Khartoum, the capital. The office has currently been closed due to the ongoing violence but Muslim Aid is “keeping a close eye on the unfolding situation” and continuously attempts to “be on the ground as soon as possible, helping those caught up in disasters and conflicts.”
2. Save the Children
Save the Children is a globally recognized charity that works to “champion the rights of children worldwide, putting the most vulnerable children first”. In 2023, the charity supported more than 1.5 million children with access to healthcare and nutrition. Their work centers around providing medical supplies, mobile health services, and games and activities for children to overcome traumatic experiences.
3. UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner For Refugees)
UNHCR is a United Nations agency working towards protecting and aiding refugees, forcibly displaced people, and stateless people. The organization is actively working in countries neighboring Sudan to prepare for new refugee arrivals and respond to those who have already arrived.
4. CARE International Foundation
Founded in 1945, CARE International is a global humanitarian organization working to end global poverty. It has been operational in Sudan since 1979 and is currently working to provide relief services to internally displaced people, assisting conflict-affected populations and promoting peace and stability in the regions of Khartoum, East Darfur, South Darfur, Kassala, and South Kordofan.
5. SAPA (Sudanese American Physicians Association)
The Sudanese American Physicians Association is a nonprofit organization established in January 2019 for physicians of Sudanese descent to “provide support networking, education among physicians within the United States as well as collaboration with and emergency aid to physicians and healthcare organizations in Sudan and abroad.” The association is currently running programs in areas of healthcare and emergency services, hunger, hygiene, and sanitation including menstrual hygiene and child blindness for Sudan.
