A Door to Fitnah –

Social media has become a major part of modern life. Millions of people spend hours every day on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), TikTok, and WhatsApp. While these tools can be used for beneficial purposes, they can also become a source of distraction, sin, and fitnah if used carelessly.
Islam teaches Muslims to use their time wisely and remain conscious of Allah in everything they do. Every action, every word, and every moment spent online will be accounted for before Allah. Therefore, it is important for Muslims to reflect on how social media affects their faith, character, and relationship with their Creator.
In this article, we will explore why social media can become a door to fitnah and how believers can protect themselves while using it.
Why Social Media Can Become a Door to Fitnah
They die, while busy with WhatsApp, busy with Twitter, busy with tweets, busy with Instagram, busy with Facebook. (Social Media)
But Not busy with the Qur’an.
Many people spend countless hours scrolling through social media, yet neglect the Quran, prayer, and remembrance of Allah. A believer should regularly ask himself whether social media is bringing him closer to Allah or distracting him from his purpose in life.
أَخَذْنَاهُمْ بَغْتَةً فَإِذَا هُمْ مُبْلِسُونَ
All of a sudden, We took them to punishment and lo! They were plunged into destruction with deep regrets and sorrows.
And then they are hopeless.
Now what will they say to Allah?
Rather the youth of today, they die while their phone is full of Haram photos, on twitter, haram photos, and on WhatsApp, they love to backbite, and send songs and clips (of Haram)
Many people today spend their lives collecting photos, videos, and conversations that may displease Allah. Instead of preparing for the Hereafter, they become absorbed in social media and worldly distractions.
The Consequences of Misusing Social Media
Social media may seem harmless at first, but when it leads to neglecting worship, wasting time, spreading sins, or forgetting Allah, it can have serious consequences. Islam teaches that every action and every moment of our lives will be accounted for on the Day of Judgment.
The beginning of the ayah explain the context of this description!
فَلَمَّا نَسُوا مَا ذُكِّرُوا بِهِ
And when they forgot what they had been reminded with
فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ أَبْوَابَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ
We opened for them gates for every (pleasant) things.
Allah took these people, who forgot Him and increased them in their provision, and then seized them while they enjoyed themselves!
How many of us have Qur’ans on our phones, Yet close the Qur’an app at any notification! How many of us can honestly say they use it regularly!
Quranic Guidance on Using Social Media Wisely
- Guarding the tongue
- Avoiding backbiting
- Lowering the gaze
- Using time wisely
- Being accountable for what we post
Don’t let the Social Media distract you from Allah!
We are so busy, responding to messages and notifications, we forget to respond to the call of the one who created us! The five Salat passes before we will lift our heads! A week will pass before we pick up our Qur’an!
And even then you find, that we will do these acts,
Yet we will quicken our Salah!
We will rush our recitation!
For what?
Social Media! A door of Fitnah!
You wouldn’t give your phones to your parents for a reason!
Because you know, they would be immensely disappointed!
Yet we forget that Allah knows All, Sees All and Hears All,
That Haram pictures, videos you view and share!
That girl/boy you flirt with and exchange pictures with!
Everything!
As Allah says in the Qur’an:
ۚ إِنَّ السَّمْعَ وَالْبَصَرَ وَالْفُؤَادَ كُلُّ أُولَٰئِكَ كَانَ عَنْهُ مَسْئُولً
Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart – about all those [one] will be questioned.
Imagine dying and meeting Allah with sins accumulating over your head!
Repent to Allah before you die!
May Allah guide us and make our social media usage a means for us to attain Jannah and not as a means for His anger and punishment.
May Allah forgive us and guide to straight path.
Aameen.
Share with others and help us to spread the right message of Islam among all over the world.
Jazak Allah Khair.
