Judgements and Forgiveness
The Holy Zohar tells us that a man was traveling and, tired, and sat down to rest on a pile of stones next to a mountain. There he fell asleep.
While he was sleeping, a venomous snake slowly approached him… but suddenly, a piece of tree fell from above and killed the snake before it could harm him.
When the man woke up and saw what had happened, he quickly got up… and in that very moment, the pile of stones where he had been lying collapsed down the mountain.
Rabbi Abba, who witnessed all this, asked in astonishment:
“What merit do you have that two thousand miracles have occurred and saved your life?”
The man replied:
“Every day, before sleeping, I forgive anyone who has hurt me or caused me suffering.
I do not hold grudges in my heart.
And even when someone hurts me, I try afterwards to do good so that my soul is not trapped in resentment.”
Upon hearing this, Rabbi Abba wept and said
“The actions of this man are even greater than those of Joseph.
Because Joseph forgave his brothers…
but this man forgives even those who are not his family.”
Before sleeping…
let go of anger.
Let go of pride.
Let go of resentment.
Because often forgiveness does not free the other…
it frees you.
The heart that forgives disarms invisible judgments.
And where resentment disappears…
the Light finds space to enter.
Forgive for your peace.
Forgive for your soul.
Forgive to sleep lightly under the wings of the Shechina.
Amen VeAmen
