Standalone Course: Academic Writing – The Islamic College

The aim of this course is to assist you in expressing your ideas in convincing academic English. It will look at the role of academic English in Islamic Studies and related fields, especially for those pursuing postgraduate studies or careers as academics or researchers. It will outline the basic format of an academic essay, including structure and paragraph usage. Attention will also be given to expectations for publishing in the field. It will also highlight some differences in style between seminary-style writing and academic writing, as well as oral and spoken English. Referencing, the use of quotations, and avoiding plagiarism will also be discussed. Sample writing will be evaluated and students will have a chance to practice a series of writing tasks.
