Overcoming Addiction Starts With These 7 Phenomenal Duas
Let’s be real—life can feel like a constant tug-of-war between our goals and our struggles. Sometimes, we’re caught in cycles we don’t know how to break. Addiction—whether it’s to bad habits, substances, or harmful behaviors—can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re questioning if Duas alone would help.
But here’s the thing: Islam reminds us that no struggle is too big when you lean on Allah (SWT). You’re not alone, and asking for help through supplication is one of the most powerful ways to find strength and patience.
We’ve created a list of Duas and reminders you can turn to when you’re trying to break free and take control of your life.
1. Dua for guidance when you feel lost
Sometimes you just need direction. Allah’s help is like the ultimate GPS when you feel stuck. This Dua from the Qur’an asks for clear guidance:
“Guide us to the straight path.”
— (Surah Al-Fatiha, 1:6)
Transliteration:
Ihdina as-sirat al-mustaqeem.
Say this often. Every Salah, every quiet moment—it’s your way of saying: “Ya Allah, help me find the right way out of this.”
2. Dua for self-control and strength
Overcoming addiction requires patience and self-control. This Dua is a must-have for when you’re feeling weak:
“Our Lord! Shower us with perseverance, make our steps firm, and give us victory.”
— (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:250)
Transliteration:
Rabbana afrigh ‘alayna sabran wa thabbit aqdamana wansurna.
You’re asking Allah to make you strong enough to beat your struggles. You should keep in mind that your ultimate victory only comes with Allah’s help. It’s not you snapping out of addiction; it’s Allah snapping you out of it.
3. Dua for forgiveness and a fresh start
Slip-ups happen, but Islam teaches us that Allah’s mercy is infinite. If you’ve messed up, say this:
“My Lord! I have definitely wronged my soul, so forgive me.”
— (Surah Al-Qasas, 28:16)
Transliteration:
Rabbi inni zalamtu nafsi faghfir li.
It’s short but heavy. This Dua reminds us that Allah loves a sincere apology—and every day is a new start.
4. Dua to replace bad habits with good ones
Sometimes it’s not just about stopping something—it’s about filling that space with better things. This is a powerful ask for transformation:
“Our Lord! Do not punish us if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord! Do not place a burden on us like the one you placed on those before us. Our Lord! Do not burden us with what we cannot bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our ˹only˺ Guardian. So grant us victory.”
— (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:286)
Transliteration:
Recite this when the load feels heavy. It’s your way of saying: “Ya Allah, help me level up.”
5. Dua for protection against temptation
Temptation is real, and it can show up out of nowhere. This Dua from the Sunnah is clutch when you need to ask Allah to keep you safe:
“O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful against what You have made unlawful, and enrich me with Your favor so that I need no one else.”
— (Tirmidhi, Hadith 3563)
Transliteration:
Allahumma ikfini bihalalika ‘an haramika wa aghnini bifadlika ‘amman siwaka.
It’s a reminder that what Allah has for you is way better than what’s pulling you down.
6. Dua for a clean heart and soul detox
Healing from addiction is also about cleansing your heart and renewing your intentions. This Dua is perfect for that inner detox:
“O Allah! I seek refuge with You from the affliction of the Fire, the punishment of the Fire, the affliction of the grave, the punishment of the grave, and the evil of the affliction of poverty. O Allah! I seek refuge with You from the evil of the affliction of Al-Masih Ad- Dajjal, O Allah! Cleanse my heart with the water of snow and hail, and cleanse my heart from all sins as a white garment is cleansed from filth, and let there be a far away distance between me and my sins as You made the East and West far away from each other. O Allah! I seek refuge with You from laziness, sins, and from being in debt.”
— (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6377)
Transliteration:
Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min fitnat in-nar wa ‘adhab in-nar, wa fitnat il-qabr wa ‘adhab il-qabr, wa sharri fitnat il-ghina, wa sharri fitnat il-faqr. Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min sharri fitnat il-masih ad-dajjal. Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min al-kasali wal-ma’tham wal-maghram.
Make this a part of your daily spiritual self-care routine.
7. Dua for a hopeful mindset
When you’re in the trenches, hope can feel far away. But Allah asks us to never lose hope in His mercy. Here’s a motivational reminder straight from the Qur’an:
“Say, ˹O Prophet, that Allah says,˺ ‘O My servants who have exceeded the limits against their souls! Do not lose hope in Allah’s mercy, for Allah certainly forgives all sins. He is indeed the All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.’”
— (Surah Az-Zumar, 39:53)
Transliteration:
Inna Allah yaghfiru adh-dhunuba jami’an. Innahu huwa Al-Ghafur Ar-Rahim.

Surround yourself with good company, seek professional help if needed, and trust that Allah (SWT) sees your struggle and will reward your persistence.
