Day 10: Reflecting on the Names of Allah – Al-Hakam, Al-‘Adl, Al-Laṭīf
There are moments in life when we feel lost, treated unfairly, or unsure about why things happen the way they do. But for every pain, every confusion, and every delay, Allah’s justice, wisdom, and kindness are always there. He is never heedless of our struggles, never distant from our tears, and never unjust in His decree.
Today, we reflect on three beautiful names of Allah—Al-Ḥakam (The Judge), Al-‘Adl (The Just), and Al-Laṭīf (The Subtle). These names remind us that no injustice goes unnoticed, no difficulty is without purpose, and no kindness is too small for Allah’s care.
Al-Ḥakam (ٱلْحَكَمُ) – The Ultimate Judge
The name Al-Hakam comes from the root ḥ-k-m (ح ك م), which means to judge, to govern, to be wise, and to pass a just verdict. Unlike human judges who can make mistakes, Allah’s judgment is absolute, perfect, and free from error.
In a world full of disputes, where people are judged unfairly and where truth is often hidden, Allah remains the perfect Judge. He alone sees every detail, every intention, and every consequence. His rulings are always based on truth, never influenced by bias or falsehood.
“And Allah judges with truth, while those they invoke besides Him judge not with anything. Indeed, it is Allah who is the Hearing, the Seeing.” (Surah Ghafir 40:20)
When we feel wronged, we must remember that true justice belongs to Allah. While human courts may fail, Allah’s judgment never does. Every oppressor will be held accountable, every innocent will be given their due, and every hidden truth will be revealed.
Reflect: How does knowing that Allah is the ultimate Judge bring comfort to your heart?
Al-‘Adl (ٱلْعَدْلُ) – The Absolutely Just
The name Al-Adl comes from the root ‘a-d-l (ع د ل), which means justice, balance, and fairness. Allah is the source of absolute justice, ensuring that every soul gets exactly what it deserves, either in this world or the next.
Fairness and justice are qualities we crave in this world, but they are not always guaranteed by people. Only Allah is Al-‘Adl, the One whose justice is absolute and perfect. He does not wrong even the smallest soul, and He does not overlook even the smallest good deed.
“And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all. And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountant.” (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:47)
Sometimes, life seems unfair—good people suffer, while wrongdoers prosper. But nothing escapes Allah’s justice. If not in this world, then in the next, He will ensure that every act of oppression is answered, and every act of righteousness is rewarded.
Reflect: How does trusting in Allah’s justice help you stay patient during difficult times?
Al-Laṭīf (ٱللَّطِيفُ) – The Most Subtle, The Most Kind
The name Al-Latif comes from the root l-ṭ-f (ل ط ف), which means gentleness, subtlety, and deep awareness. Allah’s justice and wisdom are not always obvious, but they work in ways we cannot see or comprehend.
Life often unfolds in ways we don’t expect. Sometimes, we don’t get what we want, only to realize later that Allah was protecting us from harm. Sometimes, a hardship leads us to a blessing we never imagined. This is the divine subtlety of Al-Laṭīf.
ٱللَّهُ لَطِيفٌۢ بِعِبَادِهِۦ يَرْزُقُ مَن يَشَآءُ ۖ وَهُوَ ٱلْقَوِىُّ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ١٩
“And He is the Most Subtle toward His servants; He gives provision to whom He wills. And He is the Powerful, the Exalted in Might.” (Surah Ash-Shura 42:19)
Have you ever experienced a moment when you later realized that Allah’s plan was better than yours? Allah is Al Latif. His kindness reaches us in ways we may never notice—through a delay that saves us, through a hardship that strengthens us, or through a loss that leads us to something greater.
Reflect: How can we develop trust in Allah’s subtle wisdom, even when things don’t go as planned?
