Day 09: Reflecting on Allah’s Name – Al-Mudhill, As-Sami’, Al-‘Aleem

Life is filled with moments of honor and humility, times when we are heard and times when we feel ignored, instances where knowledge brings clarity and times when uncertainty surrounds us. Through all these experiences, Allah reminds us that He alone grants status, He alone hears every prayer, and He alone possesses all knowledge.

Today, we reflect on three of His beautiful names:

• Al-Mudhill (ٱلْمُذِلُّ) – The One Who Humbles

• As-Sami’ (ٱلسَّمِيعُ) – The All-Hearing

• Al-‘Aleem (ٱلْعَلِيمُ) – The All-Knowing

By understanding these names, we gain strength, patience, and a deeper reliance on Allah in all aspects of life.

Al-Mudhill (ٱلْمُذِلُّ) – The One Who Humbles

The name Al-Mudhill comes from the root dh-l-l (ذ ل ل), which means to humiliate, to weaken, or to make low. Allah is the One who grants honor to whom He wills and lowers whom He wills.

Allah says in the Quran:

“Say, ‘O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will, and You humble whom You will. In Your Hand is [all] good. Indeed, You are over all things competent.’” (Surah Aal-e-Imran 3:26)

This name teaches us humility. Any power, wealth, or status we have is only from Allah, and He can take it away at any moment. If we find ourselves in a state of difficulty, we must turn back to Allah and seek honor through obedience to Him.

• Have you ever felt humbled by a situation? How did it bring you closer to Allah?

• How can we remain humble despite our achievements?

As-Sami’ (ٱلسَّمِيعُ) – The All-Hearing

The name As-Sami’ comes from the root s-m-‘ (س م ع), meaning to hear, to listen attentively. Allah hears every sound, every whisper, every silent prayer of the heart.

Allah reassures us:

“Indeed, my Lord is Near and Responsive (Hearing).” (Surah Hud 11:61)

This name is a source of immense comfort. Even when we feel unheard by people, even when our words fail us, Allah hears our struggles, our pain, and our gratitude. He listens to the cries of the oppressed, the whispered duas of the brokenhearted, and the unspoken hopes of every believer.

Reflection:

• Do you believe that Allah listens to every prayer, even the ones unanswered?

• When was the last time you spoke to Allah knowing He is listening?

Al-‘Aleem (ٱلْعَلِيمُ) – The All-Knowing

The name Al-‘Aleem comes from the root ‘a-l-m (ع ل م), which means to know, to be aware, to have knowledge. Allah’s knowledge is limitless and perfect.

Allah says:

“And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it…” (Surah Al-An’am 6:59)

Allah knows what is hidden in our hearts, what we struggle with, and what is best for us. Sometimes, we question why things happen the way they do, but knowing that Allah’s knowledge is complete should fill our hearts with trust and peace.

• How does knowing that Allah understands your struggles bring comfort to you?

• Have you ever looked back at a hardship and realized later how it was for your own good?

Final Thoughts

In times of difficulty or success, loneliness or companionship, clarity or confusion, these names of Allah remind us that:

• Al-Mudhill humbles the arrogant and grants honor to the humble.

• As-Sami’ hears every call, even those unspoken.

• Al-‘Aleem knows all, guiding us with His wisdom.

By reflecting on these names, we build a stronger connection with Allah, learning to trust Him in all circumstances.
