Anantnag District is in the southern sector of Jhelum Valley. The district has come to be synonymous with greatness because of its rejuvenating climate, its lofty mountains, the melodious flow of sweet waters of its springs and streams, fertile soil, fragrant flowers, and delicious fruits. The name of Anantnag District comes from the great spring Ananta Naga at the southern end of the town. This is also corroborated by almost all local historians, according to whom the town has taken the name of this great spring of Cesha or Ananta Naga ‘land of countless springs’. The spring is mentioned in the Neelmat Purana as a sacred place for the Hindus. The Anantnag district has beautiful landscapes. The district can rightly boast of possessing the largest number of hill stations in the whole State. Of them, particular mention may be made of Verinag, Kokernag, Achabal, Daksum, and the world-famous hill town of Pahalgam. It is renowned for the ancient Shiva cave temple of Amarnath and the Martand Sun temple.
If we talk about Islamabad, this district is surrounded by shrines of saints from all sides. On one side is the shrine of Hazrat Sheikh Baba Zainuddin Reshi رحمۃ اللہ علیہ and Hazrat Sheikh Baba Bamuddin Reshi رحمۃ اللہ علیہ while on the other side is the shrine of Hazrat Baba Haider Reshi رحمۃ اللہ علیہ who is known by the name of Baba Hardi Reshi رحمۃ اللہ علیہ. In and around it there are many shrines of saints which have become the center of pilgrimage for the common pilgrims such as Hazrat Baba Nag Rishi We can also call this district the district of springs because the other name of this district is called “Anantnag”. Because there are many springs in this district due to which it has been given this name. Anantnag means “countless springs”. There is a shrine at Rambirpura Kehribal, about 10 km from the same district, about which no information was available till date. This pilgrimage is known to the people here as Harut and Marut shrines and it is also planned by the same name. There is not enough information available from any book or person about this shrine to fully explain it. However, I present to all of you as much as I know and as much as I can.

You may have read or heard the story of Harut and Marut in the Holy Quran. It is said that in the time of Hazrat Idris (peace be upon him) people became very wicked. The angels pleaded in the court of God that man is very wicked and he is not worthy of the Khilafah, he should be deposed, or at least he should be the caliph and we should be the minister so that we can take care of his evil deeds. The Almighty said that he has been given anger and lust which makes him sin more. If you find these things, you will also sin. The angels said, “Dear God, we will not go to sin, no matter how much anger and lust.” The rabbi said, “It is better for you to choose among your congregation the most pious angels.” Give them anger and lust, then there will be a test. So Harut and Marut, the most devout angels, were chosen. The Almighty sent them down to the city of Babylon by giving them these things, that is, anger and lust. The two kept coming and going like this for a month by using Ism e, Azam. During that time, there was a general discussion about their justice and many cases started coming to them. One day, a very beautiful woman, Zahra, was a resident of this country, Persia. She filed a lawsuit against her husband. The two fell in love with him as soon as they saw him and wished him a bigger job (wrong doing). He said that my religion is something else and your religion is something else, and this cannot happen despite differences. Also, my husband is very proud. If he finds out, he will kill me. So first worship my idol and then kill my husband, then I am yours and you are mine. They refused. She left but the fire of his love ignited in their hearts.
Finally, they sent a message that we want to come to your house. She replied, “Welcome and come.” The two reached his house. She adorned herself and told them to either teach me the Great Name / Ism e Azam, or prostrate to the idol, or kill my husband or drink alcohol. They thought that the great name / Ism e Azam is the mystery of God, revealing it is very cruel, idolatry is shirk and killing is tantamount to wronging oneself. Have a drink, so they drank wine. When they got drunk, Zahra made them prostrate to the idol, killed her husband, and asked for Ism e Azam. After reading the Ism e Azam, Zahra changed her form and reached the sky. The Almighty connected his soul with Venus star and his form became like Venus Star. When their mark came down, they had forgotten the great name / Ism e Azam and were ashamed of what they had done. The Almighty said to the angels that man is far from my manifestation. Both of them used to be present in the evening, yet they were overwhelmed with lust and did everything. What is the wonder if a man commits sins? All the angels confessed their sin and began to pray for their forgiveness instead of cursing the people of the earth. The Qur’an says:
وَالَمَلَٰئِكَۃِ يُسَبِحُونَ بِحَمِدَ رَبِهِم وَ وَيَسَتَغَفِرُونَ لِمَن فِي الَرَرضِ
Then they both came to the court of Hazrat Idris (as) and sought intercession. Hazrat Idris (as) prayed for their forgiveness. After many days, the divine command came to give them the power to accept either the torment of this world or the Hereafter. Hazrat Idris (as) conveyed the divine command to them. He said, “O Prophet of Allah, the torment of this world is mortal and the torment of the Hereafter will last forever.” We accept worldly torment. So, the Almighty commanded the angels to bind them both in iron chains and hang them upside down in the well of Babylon. A fire is burning in this well and it is hanging. Tradition has it that the angels took turns whipping them all the time. Their tongues are hanging out with intense thirst. This torment will be severe till the Day of Resurrection.
This story is giving us many instructive advice and is giving us an indication of the great grace of Allah Almighty on us human beings that He has given us such a great honor that He created us in this human form. Then there is His grace for how gracious and merciful He is to us. This is not just a story but a piece of advice for us. Now you may be wondering what is the connection between this story and this Harut Marut shrine. Let me tell you that it is narrated that it is said that there is a piece of land in this shrine which is planned with angels. It is said that this piece of land is the same piece on which the two angels landed or it is also planned with two cities and their names are called Harut and Marut. Only Allah knows best how true this is, because no book has written about it and no great religious scholar has written or said anything about it.
This pilgrimage does not have such a high status for this reason but at the same time, it has been used as a monastery by Hazrat Amir Kabir Mir Syed Ali Hamdani رحمۃ اللہ علیہ and Hazrat Baba Haider Reshi (Reshmool Sahib رحمۃ اللہ علیہ). Both of them stayed here for a long time and continued to teach people here. The shrine has been expanded and walled off. However, it was not built in the way it should have been protected. It is surrounded by modest glass that can be easily accessed by humans or animals. Along with this shrine, there is also a Darul Uloom which is named after the Darul Uloom Hasnain Kareem. In this Darul Uloom, local children receive an Islamic education. Children from far-flung areas also come to study at this Darul Uloom. At the same time, there is a mosque next to this shrine, which is planned under the name of “Masjid Hasnain Kareem Razi Allah Anhu”. In this mosque, people from all over the area offer congregational prayers. The special thing is that Friday prayers are offered in this mosque, in which people from all over the area participate. In addition to Darul Uloom, there is also an Eidgah which is planned in the name of Hazrat Hamza. People offer Eid prayers in this Eidgah and whenever a big Islamic conference has to be held, it is held in this Eidgah.
Located in Rambirpura Kehribal, this shrine is an example in itself. But unfortunately, no high-ranking officials have ever looked at it or come to see it. Along with this shrine, there is a historical and valuable asset that we all know as “Sun Temple” or “Martand Temple”. There is a distance of a few steps between it and this shrine. At the same time, at the foot of this shrine flows the canal which we all know as “Shah Kol”, which was dug by Hazrat Zainul Abidin رحمۃ اللہ علیہ, the King of Kashmir. This will make you realize how important and special this shrine is. If no action is taken against this shrine, the result will be that we will lose this precious asset. There is also a festival at this shrine every year in which the Khatmaat-ul Moazamaat and Durood is recited throughout the day. May Allah help us to understand the true religion and follow it. May Allah Almighty grant us all the ability to truly love the saints of Allah and follow in their footsteps and make them a source of resources for us. (Ameen)
