Let It Not Govern Me – Abdur Rahman’s Corner
Peace, one and all…
I came across a beautiful prayer in Imam al-Ghazali’s Ihya Ulum al-Din, and wanted to share it here.
The struggle against our wayward nafs is difficult, not least because we are held within it, and so we are called to open ourselves to divine grace, the only power that truly does anything. Allah!
May the hearts of the lovers be opened!
‘O God! By Your power over me, turn toward me; verily, You are the All-Relenting, the Compassionate. By Your clemency toward me, forgive me! Verily, You are the All-Forgiving, the Clement. By Your knowledge of me, be affectionate to me. Verily, You are the Most Compassionate of the compassionate. By Your sovereignty let me overcome my lower soul me, and let it not govern me. Verily You are the Magnificent King’.
Quoted by Imam al-Ghazali, Ihya Ulum al-Din.
