Wudu (Ablution) In Islam & Tayammum Explained
Purification Before Salah
Wudu (Ablution)
Before performing Salah, you must be in a state of ritual purity, achieved through Wudu (ablution). Wudu is a process of cleansing specific body parts to ensure physical cleanliness and spiritual readiness.
Wudu is more than physical cleansing; it symbolizes spiritual purification and prepares you to stand humbly before Allah. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
When a Muslim washes his face, every sin he looked at with his eyes is washed away… When he washes his hands, every sin they committed is washed away… And when he washes his feet, every sin his feet walked toward is washed away. (Sahih Muslim)
Steps to Perform Wudu
- Intention (Niyyah): Begin with a sincere intention to perform Wudu for the sake of Allah.
- Say “Bismillah”: Start with the phrase “In the name of Allah” to invoke His name and seek blessings.
- Wash Hands: Wash both hands to the wrists three times, starting with the right hand. Ensure water reaches between the fingers and under the nails.
- Rinse Mouth: Take a handful of water, rinse your mouth thoroughly, and spit it out three times.
- Cleanse Nose: Sniff water into your nostrils and gently blow it out three times.
- Wash Face: Wash your face three times, from the hairline to the chin and ear to ear.
- Wash Arms: Wash your right arm up to your elbow three times, then the left arm. Start from the fingertips and ensure water reaches all areas, including the elbows.
- Wipe the Head (Masah): Wet your hands and wipe over the head once, from front to back.
- Wipe the Ears: Clean the inside and outside of the ears with damp fingers.
- Wash Feet: Wash the right foot up to the ankle three times, then the left foot, ensuring water reaches between the toes.
Important Notes about Wudu:
- Order: Perform Wudu in this specific order.
- Thoroughness: Ensure that water reaches all required areas.
- Mindfulness: Perform Wudu with focus and reverence, as it is an act of worship.
- Clean Water: Use pure water for Wudu to fulfill the ritual’s requirements.
- Actions That Invalidate Wudu: Wudu is invalidated by actions such as using the bathroom, deep sleep, passing gas, sexual intercourse, and certain other natural discharges.
Wudu Supplication Upon Completion
After completing Wudu, say:
Ashhadu alla ilaha illallah, wahdahu la sharika lahu, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluhu
I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, alone, without a partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger
